Morning brief

Quiet tape, priors carry; the only live variable is the 6/30 turn

Nothing overnight forces a re-baseline. Watch the quarter-end repo/SOFR turn and one deep bill special that reads idiosyncratic, not scarcity.

The read

No commentary, no Tier 1, no fresh prints overnight. Yesterday's priors carry into the open and nothing forces a re-baseline. The one thing our screen flags that the calendar's regular tag papers over: today is quarter- and half-year-end, and that's the live variable.

The administered anchors are current. Target band and IORB both fixed through 2026-06-29[1]. The market-clearing rails are not: SOFR and the secured set last fixed 2026-06-26[2], and repo and ON RRP stop at the same Friday stamp[3]. Monday's and today's turn prints don't publish until 8 AM. We can't yet confirm how funding traded into the turn, and the turn is exactly where we'd expect pressure to show. We sit on Friday's read knowing it predates the event we care about.

Plumbing / the one special

Freshest microstructure we have is Monday's securities-lending auction, dated 2026-06-29, and it reads idiosyncratic, not scarcity. One issue stands out: the 01/21/27 bill bid 47.4 bp special above floor[4], a clean order of magnitude above everything else. Next tier is the 10/31/26 note at 9.3 bp[5], then a cluster of fall-2026 bills near 5 bp[6].

Load-bearing for us is that gap, not the absolute level. A broad collateral squeeze shows up as a band of issues firming together; what we have is a single deep special against an otherwise flat tail. We read the 01/21/27 as name-specific short base or deliverable demand, not a front-end scarcity signal. The view breaks if today's repo print comes in firm across GC rather than concentrated in one CUSIP. Then it's turn plus scarcity, and we'd respect it.

What we'd do

What we can't see frames the trade. Dealer positioning via OFR primary-dealer data is stuck at 2026-06-17[7], near two weeks stale, so we can't tie the 01/21/27 special to a confirmed dealer short. The curve complex prints through 2026-06-25[8] and term premium runs only through 2026-06-18[9], too lagged to carry a fresh duration view.

We'd keep front-end risk light into the 8 AM publish and let the turn print set the tone. Base case: SOFR fixes elevated on the quarter-end date and normalizes back by early next week, a clean turn we'd fade rather than chase. If it stays bid into next week, the one-CUSIP scarcity read earns a second look. Assumes the desk's Friday priors on bill supply and TGA path hold; the 06-24 cash-balance stamp predates the turn[10], so a surprise drain shifts the picture.
