Morning brief

Hold's in the bag; the dots are the only trade today

Administered corridor static into the 2pm decision; the mid-June funding bump already faded, so today is a SEP story, not a rate story.

Into the decision

We're calling a hold, and the front end is already standing there with us. EFFR printed 3.63% on Tuesday[1] and IORB has held 3.65% straight through its 06-17 print[2], so the administered corridor walks into this afternoon's 2pm decision unmoved. The only thing that pays today is the SEP, where the dots land and how wide the dispersion runs.

That's also where we're flying blindest, and we'll say so plainly: the bundle hands us cash levels and reference rates but no funds futures or OIS, so we can't price the cut/hold/hike distribution the committee is grading itself against. A 'hold' headline can still move the front end through the dots, and we have zero handle on what's priced. Trade the SEP reaction, not the statement.

Funding: the bump already faded

Don't let the mid-June funding bump reframe the decision. SOFR humped to 3.69% on 06-15[3], roughly 4bp through IORB, with GCF UST repo tagging 3.711%[4] the same session. Both reversed inside a day, SOFR back to 3.63%[5], GCF UST to 3.674% by 06-16[6].

The load-bearing tell that this was plumbing, not scarcity: reserves actually rose week-on-week into 06-10, to $3.08T from $3.01T[7], and the RRP jump to $10.7B on 06-16[8] landed as rates were already easing, it lags the signal rather than drives it. A binding reserve story runs the opposite sequence. The one genuine squeeze was collateral-specific and has cleared: the Jan-21-27 bill (912797TM9) ran 142.9bp special on 06-15[9] and collapsed to 8.1bp at its 06-17 auction[10] as supply settled. Issue story, not system story. Credit backs the benign read, IG at 0.75%[11] and HY at 2.71%[12] on 06-16, both tight.

View breaks if SOFR re-firms above IORB and holds past quarter-end, or if the next reserve print drops hard. Absent that, we read the firming as mid-June tax and settlement timing, which we can't fully confirm without an issuance calendar in hand, so we hold the read loosely.

Curve positioning

Nothing on the curve is leaning into this. 2s sat at 4.07% into 06-15[13] and 2s10s at 38bp on 06-16[14], flat, no pre-decision tilt either way. We'd keep powder dry for the dots and fade any knee-jerk on the statement line before the SEP prints.

Close brief

· generated 16:19 ET

Fed held the corridor; the run-in tape was plumbing and term premium, not a Fed repricing.

Corridor held, IORB unchanged at 3.65%[^1]. Funding normalized into the print, specials faded, a 9bp flattener we can't yet decompose.

The print: a hold, corridor anchored

We read the decision as a hold that leaves the front end where it sat. IORB unchanged at 3.65% on the 18th tells us the target range didn't move, no cut, no hike in administered rates. EFFR 3.63[2] and OBFR 3.63[3] on the 17th hold the corridor steady, leaving EFFR-IORB at -2bp[4], structurally normal and not a softness signal.

The statement and the SEP aren't in our feed yet, so we won't grade the dots off a tape we don't have, the dots are the catalyst, and that read waits on the print landing in inventory. What we can mark today: administered rates didn't budge.

Plumbing: the spike was settlement, not stress

Funding normalized into the decision, and we don't think the mid-month pop was more than settlement. SOFR popped to 3.69 on 06-15[5], four basis points over IORB, then snapped back to 3.63[6] by the 16th and 17th. GCF UST repo ran the same path, 3.711 on the 15th[7] to 3.665 on the 17th[8]. The load-bearing tell that this was calendar and not reserve scarcity: it reversed inside one session with nothing in the corridor following it up.

Specials say the same. The bill 912797TM9 blew out to 142.9bp on 06-15[9], then faded to 8.1 on the 17th[10] and 6.4 on the 18th[11], a single-CUSIP squeeze relieved by SecLend supply, not broad collateral stress. ON RRP take-up jumped to 10.7bn on the 16th[12] and 6.8bn on the 17th[13] from 0.6bn[14], directional cash reaching for a floor, but the absolute size is tiny, a benign technical around coupon settlement. Credit backdrop stayed tight and quiet: IG OAS 0.75[15], HY 2.71[16] on the 16th, nothing pulling at front-end demand.

Curve: a flattener we can't yet decompose

One move we're flagging but not over-reading: 2s10s flattened nine basis points, 0.38[17] to 0.29 on the 17th[18]. The catch is decomposition, our 2y at 4.05[19] and 10y at 4.43[20] both stop at the 16th, so the flattener postdates the last component close and we can't confirm front-led versus long-led from what's loaded. The bill strip leans front: DTB6 3.68[21] against the 4-week at 3.58[22] on the 16th.

We're rejecting the read that this is the open of a hawkish front-end repricing, administered rates held, EFFR didn't move, and the specials squeeze was idiosyncratic. That call breaks if the 2y close prints a clear front-led selloff alongside hawkish dots; it assumes the SEP doesn't land with a materially higher terminal path.

Into tomorrow

BOE on Friday, non-numeric for our book. Funding priors carry, no quarter-end pressure yet, corridor anchored. Two things to chase at the open: the 2y and bill closes to decompose the flattener, and the SEP to re-baseline the path. Until the dots are in hand, we hold the term-premium read.
